Your boss, your kids and Rome

I was just thinking about your boss and your kids, and how they relate to one another. Of course, it was not my boss I was thinking about, nor were they my kids, because I have neither.

More specifically, I was thinking about the future, and where all this is going. Because you are working to make a better world, are you not. You are doing what your boss tells you so your children would be happy, are you not.

And your boss, well, we all know the bourgeoisie is only thinking about ways to provide the next meal for the proletariat. They are the ones creating jobs, they are really sweating their hearts and brains out to feed your dumb and underdeveloped no-good asses.

Without investors and banks and rich people, where would you be? You would not even have a sandwich or a piece of meat to feed yourself and your kids.

So you are doing what your good boss is telling you to do, and you are making sure your kids will live a better life, building the future all of you working people together. Like decent folks, day after day, making the world a little better.

Or are we?

Are we making the world really better?

In Belgium, we have a well-known politician called Bart De Wever. Bart likes to dwell on the Roman empire, and put some Latin sentences in his speeches. He is very inspired by the great rulers of the ancient times, and he thinks the Romans really knew how to rule and maintain their people. Uphold the law and order.

For all I know -I studied Greek and Latin, but I couldn’t remember one sentence these days- the Romans had this great philosophy of bread and plays. They said, as long as the people have bread to eat, and a play, perhaps in the arena, to watch and entertain them, they will be content and they will put up with any politics you enforce on them.

I think Bart De Wever is not the only one who is inspired by the good old days of Rome’s glory. The main business these days, at least in the west, is to give people diversions. We are giving the people plays and toys. We are investing enormously in giant sports shows, and we are creating one bullshit plastic toy after another.

So the people are happy, doing the work they do. For it allows them to see the soccer games, with lots of beer and cheer, and it allows them to buy the next bullshit plastic toy. People are happy and when you ask them how things are going, they say that things are going great. They could not be more satisfied.

In the meantime, their bosses are making what they are making in a year in just one week time, plundering the earth and polluting the environment. Starting wars and eliminating the opposition. The bosses, who are the great and sacred people making sure you can see the football on you big-tv-home-theater-system, all while being surrounded by lots and lots of plastic toys, are of course supported by the government, as we all know the government as well wants the best for its people.

So the government helps the bosses provide for your daily bread. Hell, your boss and the government, they must be god in person if they are doing that. They are providing for you by taking away from the poor countries and from our Mother, the Earth.

And if the ecologists or the socialists would make a fuss about that, they can be sure that you are all on the right side right? On the side of your MacDonald’s and your PokĆ©mon. You know what’s important, and if they would say fight for it, you would go shoot the motherfucking poor people and bomb the shit out of the socialists.

After all, who doesn’t like football and MacDonald’s, and who does not love plastic toys?

So you are working very hard, for your boss, the good and sacred saint, who is of course aided by and aiding the state, just to make a better world for your offspring.

And all of you together, pulling on the same rope day after day, you get the oil out of the ground, you get the primitives out of the way, you get the plastic to your doorstep, you get the food and t-shirts produced in the Jamaican sweatshop in your house, and you are doing all of this not losing the time to watch the Yankees and the Mets or having a nice relaxed vacation enjoying the Mexican and Thai cuisine.

And you can be sure your kids will have even more fabulous lives!

Or will they?

Will they still be able to swim in the sea when all the beaches are littered up with your plastic toys? Will they still have fish to eat with their bread if you and your government have cleared the oceans of all life? Will there still be a reef to dive in when all ocean life is poisoned, killed and heated? Will there still be air to breathe when all your cars and planes have poisoned that as well? Will there still be water safe to drink, when you have discharged all the waste from your plastic toy factories into Earth’s veins? Will there be any ground left to stand on, when all of the oceans will have risen due to your heating up the world?

So I was just thinking, about your boss and your children.

I was thinking how your boss is doing such a wonderful job providing for them.

And why you should help him.

Because he loves your kids.

Maybe he loves them for breakfast, or with their asses up in some Thai cultural child prostitution institution. Or with a lemon in their mouth and some parsley behind their ears in his good old butcher's window display.

And never forget, you are the good guys, you know what’s good and what’s worth fighting for.

Who cares about some native tribe or some Cuban medical care? Who cares about child labor in Third World countries, or people working seventy hour weeks on an assembly line in China? Who cares about Ghana and the technology trash they burn there for retrieving some threads of copper, all the while killing themselves? Who cares about people living on the exotic landfills or the slums in Bangkok, trying to scratch together some nickels and dimes by collecting waste?

Why would we listen to them? What do they know? Do they know who scored the deciding points for the Mets or the Yankees? Do they know how bad it feels to have your brand new Lamborghini scratched? Do they know what it’s like not to get the toy you want with your MacDonald’s meal?

Who listens to them? Who cares about them?

You are right of course, all that matters is your boss and your children. And how your boss is such a caring and generous person, and how your kids will have a fabulous life with lots of plastic toys and airplane holidays to Thailand.

We are building a better world, aren’t we?

We are working for the future.

We are investing all we’ve got.

And as I said, your boss loves your kids, and he cares a lot about you.

That is why it doesn’t happen much that he lays of a tonload of people after having cashed in some big government funding and tax reduction. Your boss does not care about money, he cares about you! Why would he otherwise be creating jobs, he is the heart of the economy, he is what makes your country great.

He is the heart, and he is god providing you with your daily bread.

And Mets games.

This is not Rome. Rome was all about exploiting colonies for the sake of money and power. It was about the megalomania of some sick and disturbed emperors who didn’t give a shit about the world or the people and only cared about themselves. It was about backstabbing and reaping in the positions in the office.

This is not Rome.

This is far better.

This is globalized capitalism!

Now everyone lives like a king.

And tomorrow, we will live as god himself.

You bet.
